(Reuters) – Canadian police and intelligence agencies will announce multiple arrests on Monday after an operation to thwart a “major terrorist attack,” the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported, citing unidentified “highly placed” sources.

The operation was coordinated with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the FBI, CBC said.

Canada’s national police agency was expected to hold a news conference later on Monday to give details of the alleged plot.

Law enforcement officials said the suspects have no connection to the two brothers accused of bombings at the Boston Marathon last week, CBC said.

Canadian police have thwarted a terror plot that aimed to target transport links in the country.

Several people had been under surveillance for several months regarding the plot, CNN reported Monday.

Update via Toronto Sun:

A potential bomb plot on a passenger train over the Niagara River has been averted, a police source says.

While officials have not confirmed the train bombing plan, the RCMP are holding a news conference at 3:30 p.m. Monday to outline details of the arrest of what they say was a planned terror plot.

One police source said there were several scenarios being looked at during the year the suspects were tracked, including the train plot.

One of the plots uncovered by the RCMP and other agencies was a planned bombing of a passenger train on the bridge that connects Canada and the United States at Niagara Falls, a police source says.

“The plan was to take out a train with passengers on board and the crossing trestle,” said a source. “It was meant to be spectacular and there would have been a lot of carnage.”

Update: Wait, I thought Obama defeated al-Qaeda or something?
