Rubio should thank Bloomberg for boosting his status within the Republican party.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the gun control advocacy group that’s bankrolled by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I), targetted Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) in its latest ad for opposing an expansion of background checks, charging that the 2016 contender’s “presidential ambitions make Florida less safe.”

“Marco Rubio, a new senator, but already looking past Florida, thinking of running for president,” the ad’s narrator says. “And that has Rubio running to the right, opposing a bill on comprehensive background checks.”

The ad closes with the narrator citing in-state support for background checks, a proposal that has been met with widespread public backing since the December massacre in Newtown, Conn.

“Ninety-one percent of Floridians support background checks,” the narrator says. “But Rubio’s presidential ambitions make Florida less safe.”
