The White House has so far furloughed nearly 500 employees in its budget office, but press secretary Jay Carney won’t say if anyone working directly for President Obama in the West Wing has been affected.

At a press briefing Monday, he detailed the budget-office cuts but refused to say if employees of the “White House Office” are subject to furloughs or pay cuts. That office has 468 employees, including 68 special assistants to the president with an annual average salary of $110,000 each and three calligraphers who earn an average of $92,000. It also includes the first lady’s staff.

“Within the Executive Office of the President, a component of that the Office of Management and Budget, there have been 480 employees who have been notified,” Carney said. “I have no other notices to announce to you.”

He said the White House has been cutting costs in other ways, such as scaling back equipment purchases, curtailing staff travel, reducing the use of air cards and reviewing contracts to find savings.
