Via KAKE News:
A Wisconsin man has been charged with taking part in a cyber-attack on Koch Industries that was organized by a group called Anonymous, the U.S. Attorney’s office said today.
Eric J. Rosol, 37, Black Creek, Wis., is charged with one count of conspiracy to damage a protected computer and one count of damaging a protected computer.
Prosecutors allege in February, 2011, a loosely organized group of computer hackers called Anonymous began using Internet Relay Chat channels to advertise a dedicated denial of service attack against Koch industries and seeking participants to the attack. Such an attack aims at making a computer resource unavailable to users by saturating the target with large numbers of external communication requests. If successful, the attack causes the target computer to be unable to respond or to respond so slowly as to be effectively unavailable.
The attackers used a tool known as a “Low Orbit Ion Cannon” that could send a high volume of repeated requests to Koch Web sites.
On Feb. 27, 2011, prosecutors said Anonymous told conspirators to use the Low Orbit Ion Cannon to attack a Koch Industries Web site, “quiltednorthern.com.”
On Feb. 28, 2011, prosecutors alleged Anonymous told conspirators to attach a Koch Industries Web site, “Kochind.com.” Rosol and others launched Low Orbit Ion Cannon attacks on “Kochind.com.”
As a result of the attack, the Web site “Kochind.com” crashed.
A phone message left for Rosol at his home was not immediately returned. Prosecutors do not know whether he has retained an attorney.
A Koch Industries spokesperson was unaware of the indictment when reached this afternoon.
If convicted, Rosol faces a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000 on each count.
An examination of what appears to be Rosol’s Facebook page indicates that he liked left wing pages such as Occupy Appleton, Barack Obama, Vote Hemp, Progressives United, Atheist Revolution, Boycott and Defeat Koch Industries, etc.
The FBI were also looking at others in connection with this action so other charges may yet be forthcoming.
