US President Barack Obama has made a direct address to the people of Iran to mark the holiday of Nowruz, also asking the country’s leaders to abandon any nuclear weapons ambitions.

He said that he has offered Iran’s leaders a new relationship with the US if they will uphold international standards, especially concerning the country’s nuclear ambitions.

“The people of Iran have paid a high and unnecessary price because of your leaders’ unwillingness to address this issue,” Mr Obama said in the remarks released on the White House Youtube channel.

Mr Obama reiterated that the US would be responsive if the Iranian government took steps to reduce tensions generated by its nuclear programme, which Tehran has maintained is for peaceful purposes.

But the president warned Iran’s leaders that shirking the diplomatic responsibility will lead to consequences.
