In reaction to the ruling by an Israeli court that the Jewish state is not responsible for the death of American pro-Palestinian activist Rachel Corrie, former President Jimmy Carter deplored the decision as “unacceptable.” Corrie was run over by an Israeli army bulldozer in Gaza in 2003 while she was protesting Israeli policy in the area.

“The killing of an American peace activist is unacceptable,” Carter stated. “The court’s decision confirms a climate of impunity, which facilitates Israeli human rights violations against Palestinian civilians in the Occupied Territory.” The ex-U.S. president further remarked, “I hope that the U.S. government will use all reasonable means to ensure that the rights of American citizens are protected overseas and that justice is done for the Corrie family.”

A district court in Haifa last week dismissed all of the charges that had been brought in a civil suit by Corrie’s parents against the Israeli government. District Court Judge Oded Gershon ruled that Corrie, a pro-Palestinian member of the International Solidarity Movement, made a conscious decision to enter and remain in the Gaza Strip despite being aware that it was a war zone with the clear potential to pose a threat to her personal safety.
