TAMPA — Republican convention delegates might have been amused by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee’s joke last night at the expense of Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, but the Democratic National Committee chairwoman was not. Huckabee, Wasserman Schultz says, “has a problem with a strong woman’s voice.”
During his speech to the convention Wednesday night, Huckabee said that “the only hitch in an otherwise perfect week was the awful noise coming from the hotel room next door to mine. Turns out it was just Debbie Wasserman Schultz, practicing her speech for the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte next week. Bless her heart.”
I asked Wasserman Schultz about the joke this morning when she broke bread with U.S. News editors. Her response was striking for its bluntness of her personal assessment of Huckabee.
“I think that shows that Mike Huckabee has a problem with a strong woman’s voice. He must not be used to hearing the voice of a strong woman or comfortable with it. I think that probably explains why he—even though every major Republican in his party condemned and opposed Todd Akin’s outrageous comments, he did the opposite and embraced them and embraced Todd Akin and he has sent out fundraising for him. So I think it shouldn’t be surprising that Mike Huckabee has an obvious problem with the traits of a strong woman.”
