President Obama heads to New York on Wednesday to raise money and shoot a few hoops in an event labelled the “Obama Classic.” NBA stars like Carmelo Anthony, Rajon Rondo, Kyrie Irving, Joe Johnson and Paul Pierce, are expected at Chelsea Piers for a celebrity game.
Campaign spokeswomen Jen Psaki was coy about whether the hoops junkie President would join the game. “The president does love basketball, but I don’t have anything to report yet,” she told reporters this week. “I’ll just say I feel pretty good about … how the president is going to play tomorrow [Wednesday],” she added.
Other planned activities include a “skills camp” that costs $5,000 for 2 tickets and an autograph session with players for $250. Former NBA stars, Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning are also expected to attend. “Hit the court with Patrick Ewing and Melo? Trade stories with the President? This is the kind of stuff your kids will tell their kids, and no one will believe it until you show them a photo,” said an email pitching the event to Obama supporters.
The big-ticket item of the Obama Classic is a $20,000 a head dinner at the Time Warner Center hosted by NBA legend Michael Jordan. Roughly 120 people are expected at the dinner and the whole day is expected to raise more than $3 million for the Obama reelection campaign.
