Transgender activists are cheering a new memo from the Department of Health and Human Services that will bar health care discrimination against transgendered people by companies receiving federal dollars.

According to a memo obtained by Chris Geidner of BuzzFeed, HHS considers discrimination based on “gender identity or failure to conform to stereotypical notions of masculinity or femininity” to be illegal under the Affordable Care Act.

The memo comes in response to a letter sent to HHS by a number of LGBT and transgender rights groups in June.

“Transgender people face severe discrimination in healthcare settings and are often denied care completely,” Maya Rupert, National Center for Lesbian Rights said in a statement.
