Watching Meghan McCain speak at the Washington, D.C. Jewish Community Center Thursday night was like watching a square peg try to fit into a round hole.

The 27-year-old daughter of former GOP presidential candidate and Ariz. senator John McCain dutifully declared to the audience how patriotic she was, how much she loved guns and the military, and that she believed in small government.

On climate change deniers: “I can’t even touch that. Is climate change a liberal issue? We’re having the hottest summer on record, and wildfires for a reason.”

On gun control: “I’m a big second amendment rights supporter, but I’ve changed my mind about how much you need. There is no need to have more than 30 rounds at a time. Especially after Gabby Giffords.”

On gay marriage: “I think gay marriage is civil rights. This generation just wants their friends to have equal rights.”

On abortion: “I personally am pro-life, but I don’t want to repeal Roe v. Wade. I think there would be riots in the streets. It’s such a private choice for a woman and I don’t like telling people how they should live their lives. Talking about abortion makes me uncomfortable, the vaginal probe [issue] makes me uncomfortable, and it shames women.”

On marijuana legalization: “Look what’s going on with marijuana in this country. I just smoked it this book.”

On who she’d like to see as a Republican president, other than her father: “Is Mitt Romney the wrong answer? [laughs] I’d like to see Lindsay Graham or Joe Lieberman.”
