Now, if we asked if Obama was running for president of Blacki-stan I get the feeling howls of waaaaacism (possibly even the “dog-whistle” variety) would soon follow.

On Thursday’s edition of MSNBC Live, host Thomas Roberts asked a panel of black contributors whether presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney’s new ad, “Promise to America,” is worthy of criticism for its lack of diversity. MSNBC contributor Karen Hunter suggested, based on the absence of minority faces in the ad, that perhaps Romney is “running for the presidency of ‘Caucasia-stan’ or some place that doesn’t have anyone of color in it.”

The two-and-a-half-minute long web ad features slick images of Romney, American flags, blue-collar workers, and smiling crowds.

“Did he say, ‘This time we’ll get it white’?” Hunter joked, referring to Romney’s narration that “this time, we’ll get it right.”

“Maybe he’s not running for the presidency of the United States, maybe he’s running for the presidency of ‘Caucasia-stan’ or some place that doesn’t have anyone of color in it,” she said, referring to a mock-country made up entirely of caucasians.
