(USA Today) — Later today, President Obama will be attending the seventh and eighth fundraisers of his three-day trip west, but aides say he is also conducting his duties as chief executive.

“It sort of ebbs and flows,” said White House spokesman Jay Carney. “We’re consolidating a lot of events out here because he’s here, and then there will be periods of relatively few political events and then more concentration, depending on what’s on the schedule.”

In addition to fundraisers in the Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle areas, Obama made a speech on manufacturing Wednesday at the Master Lock plant in Milwaukee; today, he discusses trade policy at a Boeing plant in Everett, Wash.

Late tonight, he returns to the White House.

“This trip involves a number of political events,” Carney said. “I think as I probably noted back when we discussed this in the past, as this year progresses, the president will, of course, have to spend more time on the campaign, on the re-election effort, and that that would be a gradual escalation as required by the process.”
