The president said it will be up to the American people to decide whether Newt Gingrich calling him the “foodstamp president” reflects values that America wants in a president.
Asked if the label carried potentially racist undertones, Obama called it a “rhetorical flourish” that he doesn’t think the American people are interested in.
“I think the American people are going to make a judgment about who’s trying to bring the country together and who’s dividing it, who reflects sort of the core values that helped create this country– values of hard work and responsibility but also of looking out for one another — and who is tapping into some of our worst instincts,” he said in an interview with ABC News.
