Meeting in the middle on abortion — Oregonian editorial board op-ed
That pivotal Supreme Court decision, announced 39 years ago this week, secured the right of reproductive self-determination for American women. It also helped to rectify an inequity more related to poverty than gender.
Before Roe, it wasn’t easy for wealthy Oregonians to get an abortion, but they got one if they were desperate. They just had to find $1,300 to fly to Japan. Poor women, meanwhile, resorted to quacks, coat hangers and herbal potions.
Today in Oregon, desperate women can terminate a pregnancy safely and legally, and the availability of abortion bolsters not only their own family’s security but also the health of our society. Around the country, however, abortion rights are under seige. This year, two initiatives aimed at curtailing Roe are probably headed to the Oregon ballot, too. And advocates are gearing up for a fight.
