President Obama’s few chords of “Let’s Stay Together” had the internet abuzz Friday, but his smooth singing voice wasn’t exactly a secret.
In “The Obamas,” Jodi Kantor’s book about the first couple published last week, she writes that “[t]he president could really sing,” citing Cheryl Whitaker, a pianist who is married to Obama’s close friend Eric Whitaker. Whitaker, Kantor wrote, compared Obama’s voice to Otis Redding’s.
Toward the end of the 2008 campaign, he sang some of Aretha Franklin’s “Chain of Fools” at a rally in Detroit [seen above — ed.].
