Hard to believe Turkey was an ally of Israel just a few years ago.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had breakfast with Palestinian girl Waad Tamimi, who confronted Israeli soldiers in the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh last November. The provocation, led by 13-year-old Tamimi and her family, and the accompanying video, turned her into a Palestinian heroine.
Erdogan met Tamimi and her mother Nariman in a Turkish hotel in Sanliurfa region on Sunday. The Turkish news agency Anatolia reported that he talked with the two and gave them a few gifts. Later, young Tamimi said that this was the first time she had breakfast with a prime minister.
“I thank Prime Minister Erdogan for his hospitality and his support of Palestine,” said the young girl. Last week Tamimi received a “Courage Award” in Istanbul. She also attended the opening of an exhibition titled “Being a child in Palestine”.
During the ceremony, Tamimi thanked the applauding Turkish children, called on Palestinian children to stay proud, and said that she waved her fist in the face of Israeli soldiers as a way to liberate Palestine. Tamimi also said that she wants to become a lawyer and fight for the Palestinian cause.
A video of the protest, which has been uploaded to Youtube and has garnered thousands of views, shows a group of children, led by Tamimi, yelling and cursing the soldiers in a clear attempt to provoke a response.
